What's an employee-owned smartphone?
Employee-owned smartphones are devices purchased and owned by employees and used for both business and personal purposes. Traditionally, organizations haven't allowed personal smartphones to be used on the corporate network.
Today however, many employees are purchasing smartphones on their own and expecting to access the corporate network and resources with them. This can pose a number of security risks. But with the right policies and technologies in place, organizations can feel confident in allowing the use of employee-owned smartphones.
Some best practices include:
- Define the types of employees who can access the corporate network with a personal device
- Determine which applications and services can be accessed
- Decide how many platforms and types of devices your organization will support and what level of support will be provided
- Consider the security measures and IT policies that will be enforced on employee-owned smartphones
