Challenge

To place a customer order, a Dichtomatik customer service representative had to manually input the information into the company’s back-end system. A warehouse employee then received the order and had to print numerous pages to search the warehouse and find the products, which was time-consuming and costly from a printing perspective. As the orders did not specify where in the warehouse each product was stored, the staff needed to browse through several racks until they found the appropriate item, taking a lot of time. And as many products look very similar warehouse staff were frequently sourcing the wrong product or having to fix incorrect client orders. The company’s warehouse wasn’t automated so employees had no way of knowing if sufficient products were in stock or if products were missing, delaying the completion of the order and, as a result, adversely affect the service to customersWhen an order was complete, employees had to handwrite a shipping label, a procedure which was vulnerable to human error. Then, they had to update the company’s ERP inventory system. Because the inventory was not updated immediately, products in the system sometimes appeared as available when in fact they were not.

Solution

Dichtomatik equipped its warehouse employees with BlackBerry® smartphones and implemented a customized application developed by BlackBerry® Alliance Member, Cytron® Soluciones Móviles, which was designed to automate and integrate two core areas for completing orders - inventory management and supply chain. Each warehouse employee is also equipped with a portable barcode scanner and printer which synchronize with the BlackBerry smartphone via Bluetooth® technology.
