Challenge

  • Revenue Production Inspectors (RPIs) needed a efficient mobile solution to issue fares to customers travelling without a ticket
  • A web application was not an option for Merseyrail because the core of its network is underground and beyond network access
  • The solution had to be secure, easy to use and cost-effective

  • Enabled Merseyrail to regain lost revenues – large crowds used to mean some passengers would board trains for free
  • RPIs already used a BlackBerry® platform so the Interchange application required no new equipment and was very cost-effective – only 5% of the price to implement a propriety solution
