Challenge

Revenue Production Inspectors (RPIs) needed a efficient mobile solution to issue fares to customers travelling without a ticket
A web application was not an option for Merseyrail because the core of its network is underground and beyond network access
The solution had to be secure, easy to use and cost-effective

The BlackBerry® solution includes automatic reconciliation and saves each RPI 20-30 minutes at the end of his or her day
RPIs used to spend several minutes assigning fares to each passenger, now the ticketing is complete in seconds
Customer satisfaction increased as RPIs had more free time to interact with passengers
Enabled Merseyrail to regain lost revenues – large crowds used to mean some passengers would board trains for free
RPIs already used a BlackBerry® platform so the Interchange application required no new equipment and was very cost-effective – only 5% of the price to implement a propriety solution
