Wilsons Fuel Co. Limited (Wilsons)

Now that we have this BlackBerry PlayBook tablet solution in place we’re thinking of opening more stores 24 hours. It’s a simple solution, but the added peace of mind regarding theft prevention and personal safety has been a huge benefit.

Full Story

Keeping night employees at Wilsons’ 24-hour service stations safe and preventing theft is a high priority for the company. After considering traditional options of doubling after-hours staff or having continuous CCTV-based surveillance by an outside security firm, its IT team had a novel idea that would help improve safety and security without a dramatic increase in costs. They equipped night attendants at nine of Wilsons’ service stations with PlayBook tablets to create a web of video communications between the attendants.

To help protect each of the nine gas stations, Wilsons grouped the stations into three buddy teams of three. Each station was then equipped with two specially-mounted PlayBook tablets so each overnight attendant could keep an eye on their two buddy attendants at nearby stations. Using the PlayBook tablets’ built-in videoconferencing ability and the stations’ Wi-Fi® connections to the Internet, employees are connected to two peers who can alert authorities at any sign of danger. The team at Wilsons believe the PlayBook tablets can also act as a deterrent to crime.
